View all the fees for withdrawing and depositing cash in the Netherlands and abroad.

As of 1 January 2022, the limit for withdrawing cash (notes and coins) free of charge changed from €12,000 to €17,500 per year. This allows you to withdraw more money without incurring costs. The €17,500 threshold applies per account holder, rather than per debit card or current account. If you have several accounts, the withdrawals from all your accounts will be added together. In this context, withdrawals from a joint account will be assigned to the account holders in equal shares. The €17,500 threshold applies to all cash withdrawals of coins and notes (including foreign currency) in the Netherlands and abroad. When you make any withdrawals in foreign currency, the euro equivalent will be added. If your cash withdrawals exceed €17,500 per year, a fee of €5 per transaction plus 0.5% of the amount withdrawn will be charged. Different thresholds apply for students and young people. See the calculation examples at the bottom of this page.

In the tables below, the fee bracket reflects the ratio between the amount withdrawn or deposited and the costs charged in addition.

Cash withdrawal calculation example Example 1: you only have a personal current account

Example 1: you only have a personal current account

During a calendar year, you made several withdrawals from your personal current account for a total of €17,500.

  • As this amount falls within the first fee bracket, you will not pay any additional charges.

Later that year, you make a cash withdrawal of €2,000.

  • This €2,000 withdrawal falls into the second fee bracket, which does carry a charge.
  • For this cash withdrawal, you will pay €15 (€5 + 0.50% * €2,000). Every subsequent cash withdrawal which you make in this calendar year will fall entirely into the second fee bracket.
Example 2: you and the other account holder have personal current accounts and a joint current account

During a calendar year, you made several cash withdrawals from your own current account for a total of €17,500 and the other account holder made several cash withdrawals from their own current account for a total of €16,500.

  • These withdrawals fall within the first fee bracket and will not attract a charge.

Later that year, you make a cash withdrawal of €2,000 from your joint current account.

  • In the rate calculation, 50% of this amount will be charged to your account and the other 50% to the other account holder’s account.
  • For you, this €1,000 falls into the second fee bracket, which carries a charge.
  • For this cash withdrawal, you will pay €7.50 (€2.50 + 0.50% * €1,000).
  • These costs are debited to the joint current account.
  • Every subsequent cash withdrawal which you make in this calendar year will fall entirely into the second fee bracket.
  • The other account holder has withdrawn a total of €17,500 with this withdrawal, which still falls within the first fee bracket and does not carry a charge.
Example 3: you only have a joint current account

During a calendar year, you and the other account holder made several withdrawals from your joint current account for a total of €35,000.

  • This amount is divided equally between the two of you, which means €17,500 per person.
  • The withdrawals fall within the first fee bracket and you will not pay any fees in respect of these withdrawals.

Later that year, you make a cash withdrawal of €2,000 from your joint current account.

  • In the rate calculation, 50% of this amount will be charged to your account and the other 50% to the other account holder’s account.
  • With this withdrawal, the two of you exceed the first fee bracket by €1,000 per person.
  • For this cash withdrawal, you will pay €15 together (2 x (€2.50 + 0.50% * €1,000)).
  • Every subsequent cash withdrawal which you make in this calendar year will fall entirely into the second fee bracket.
