This recipe is similar to a hamburger steak smothered in a gravy. Depending on the recipe, you will find it is served with brown gravy, mushroom gravy, or an onion gravy.

Salisbury steak is a dinner idea that is made with ground beef and made into a patty form. You will find it is seasoned with herbs, spices, breadcrumbs for a tender and juicy that is then smothered in a rich brown gravy. You will find some recipes feature mushrooms and onions as well.

You might also known this by a “poor man’s steak” which is a way for poor folk to enjoy “steak” back in the 19th century when money was very hard to come by.

  1. The first thing you will want to do is add your meat, breadcrumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl.
  2. With your hands you will work all the ingredients together making sure it is combined. Then form 4 flattened patties.
  3. In a skillet on the stove turn to medium heat. Place patties in the pan and let cook until no longer pink. Flip over to ensure both sides cook. Once done, remove hamburgers from the pan.
  4. Turn the temperature to low, and then mix up the gravy packets with hot water in a measuring cup, stir in the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Pour into the skillet, and mix until thickened and smother hamburger steaks.

  1. Return the cooked patties, and smother in the gravy mixture, top with parsley if you would like and serve and enjoy.

Storage Of Leftovers

Fridge – If you have leftovers you will be able to store the meat along with the gravy in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat warm in the microwave, or even in a skillet on the stove. Just watch to not burn the gravy if you do that route.

Freezing – You can freeze any leftovers for up to 3 months. Just place in a freezer friendly container. This warms up pretty well. If you warm it up in the oven, make sure to cover it in aluminum foil.

  • If you want you can use old fashioned oatmeal in replace of bread crumbs in the recipe to make gluten free.
  • I used packet brown gravy mix to make it easy. If you would like you can make a homemade brown gravy, onion gravy or mushroom gravy.
  • Toss in sliced mushrooms to cook with the gravy to add mushrooms to the steaks.
  • Press your finger down in the center of the beef patties before you cook. This will help to prevent your patties from shrinking up as they cook in your skillet.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs plain
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Gravy Mix

  • 2 packets brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

  • In a bowl you will mix your ground beef, bread crumbs, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, garlic powder, and onion powder together. It is best to mix with hands to ensure it incorporates.

  • Form 4 patties, and place in a skillet on medium heat. You will cook your hamburger patties until they are fully cooked and no longer pink.

  • Pour your gravy mix, hot water, and ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl and mix well.

  • Remove patties from skillet and pour in the gravy mix. Cook for a few minutes until thickened. Place burger patties back in the pan.

  • Smother in the brown gravy, and top with parsley if you would like. Serve this Salisbury steak with any of your favorite side dishes.

Meat – You can use ground turkey, chicken or pork in replace of the ground beef.

Alternative to Bread crumbs – Feel free to use old fashioned oats in replace of bread crumbs if you would like.

Gravy – I used packet gravy to make it easy, but you can make a homemade brown gravy if you would like to smother your hamburger steaks in .

Mushrooms – You can add in mushrooms to cook with patties and mix in with the gravy if you would like a mushroom flavor to your dish.
